The Confirmation program at ALC is rooted in the promises of God in Holy Baptism. The overall goal of the program is to equip young people to live the Christian life with God's people everywhere for the sake of the whole world.
The "Confirmation" program formally begins in 5th grade as young people are guided and welcomed into the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Typically, five or six weekly meetings with the class and the pastor precede a First Communion Sunday.
Sixth graders are encouraged to participate more fully in the life of the church by becoming acolytes. Classes to prepare for this way of serving God's people in worship are usually offered in 4-6 weekly meetings, depending on the size of the group.
During 7th and 8th grades, young people engage in a more intensive time of learning the Christian faith. Meeting on Wednesday afternoons throughout the school year, 7th graders are challenged to grow in basic Biblical literacy. In 8th grade, Martin Luther's Small Catechism guides a year-long focus on the basic teachings of the Christian faith.
The Confirmation program continues in 9th grade by invitation only - typically for those who have completed the work of the previous two years (or equivalent in another congregation). These 9th graders then spend two months finishing the program with a project and further worship participation and leadership, finally confirming their faith in an Affirmation of Baptism on the last Sunday in October.
